(CNA) Taipei, July 8 – A sudden ground subsidence occurred today near Lane 199, Dunhua North Road in Taipei's Songshan District. Fire and police personnel responded to the scene and discovered a sinkhole approximately 4 meters long, 2 meters wide, and 1 meter deep. Due to a ruptured gas pipeline causing a leak, residents have been evacuated and traffic control is in place.

At 10:42 AM, fire and police received a report of a road surface depression in front of a building at Alley 16, Lane 199, Dunhua North Road, Songshan District. The depression formed a sinkhole about 4 meters long, 2 meters wide, and 1 meter deep. A strong smell of gas permeated the area, prompting an immediate response.

In addition to setting up a cordon to prevent further accidents, fire and police personnel urgently evacuated nearby residents and notified relevant Taipei City Government departments to assess the situation. Traffic control is currently in effect.

Taipei City Councilor Chin Hui-chu of the Kuomintang rushed to the scene after receiving complaints from residents. She stated through a media group that because the sinkhole is adjacent to a large construction site with cranes and machinery, surrounding residents are extremely concerned that the construction has caused underground hollowing, endangering the structural integrity of nearby homes. Furthermore, a ruptured gas pipeline during this period caused a strong gas odor at the scene. Gas company personnel have since emergency shut off the gas valve.

Relevant Taipei City Government units are en route to the scene to investigate. The detailed cause of the incident is pending further clarification. (Editor: Chang Ya-ching) 1150708
