(CNA Havana, July 7, Foreign News) Cuba experienced a nationwide blackout yesterday, with many areas still without power. Protests erupted in the capital, Havana, today, with residents banging pots and pans and honking horns, shouting "Turn on the lights." The United Nations discussed the US sanctions against Cuba today, with representatives from many countries calling for an end to the sanctions.

Reuters reported that Cuban authorities stated that most areas had been reconnected to the national power grid by tonight, but due to fuel shortages, power supply remains interrupted in many areas, leaving them in darkness after nightfall.

The US administration, attempting to overthrow Cuba's communist government, has called for democratic elections in Havana and the release of "political" prisoners. In January of this year, Washington cut off fuel supplies to Cuba in an effort to force Havana into negotiations, and subsequently imposed new sanctions, prompting foreign companies to withdraw from Cuba, causing the local tourism industry to nearly collapse.

Officials from both countries stated that negotiations between the two sides have stalled.

The UN General Assembly began debating the US sanctions against Cuba today. US Ambassador to the UN Michael Waltz pointed out that the Cuban government should be held responsible for the power shortage.

However, most national representatives speaking at the meeting called on Washington to end the fuel embargo and lift the sanctions that have paralyzed Cuba's economy. (Intern Editor: Luo Yien / Editor: Liu Shuqin) 1150708
