(CNA, Taipei, Aug. 8) The Central Weather Administration (CWA) issued a high-temperature advisory for 12 counties and cities today. Weather expert Wu Der-rong stated that Super Typhoon Bavi will affect Taiwan on the 10th and 11th, with winds and rain intensifying throughout the day on the 10th and becoming fierce on the 11th, necessitating vigilance against disaster-causing winds and rain. Winds and rain on the island are expected to gradually decrease from the evening of the 11th.

The CWA issued a high-temperature advisory, indicating that the Pacific high-pressure system is causing hot weather across the island. Today, Tainan City is under an orange alert, with temperatures expected to reach an extreme 38 degrees Celsius. New Taipei City, Changhua County, Yunlin County, Chiayi City, Chiayi County, Kaohsiung City, Pingtung County, and Hualien County are also under an orange alert, with the possibility of consecutive days of 36-degree Celsius temperatures. Taipei City, Taichung City, and Yilan County are under a yellow alert, with temperatures expected to exceed 36 degrees Celsius.

Wu Der-rong, an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at National Central University, stated in the "Heavenly Secrets Revealed Classroom" column of the Weather Application Promotion Foundation that the latest European model simulations show that the Pacific high-pressure system will influence the region for the next two days, with clear to cloudy skies and localized brief showers in mountainous areas in the afternoon. The weather will be as hot as midsummer, with the highest temperatures nationwide around 38 degrees Celsius, requiring attention to sun protection and heatstroke prevention.

Wu Der-rong said that the latest model simulations indicate that Super Typhoon Bavi will affect Taiwan on the 10th and 11th. Winds and rain will intensify throughout the day on the 10th, and become fierce on the 11th. Central and northern Taiwan and mountainous areas should be wary of destructive strong winds and severe rainfall. Winds and rain on the island are expected to gradually decrease from the evening of the 11th.

Wu Der-rong mentioned that from the 12th to the 16th, Typhoon Bavi will have moved away, but due to the southerly wind and residual moisture, the atmosphere will remain unstable, with occasional localized showers and frequent strong convective development in the afternoon, accompanied by lightning, strong winds, and sudden heavy rainfall.

Wu Der-rong stated that the latest CWA typhoon track forecast map shows that Typhoon Bavi, the ninth typhoon, continues to move northwest-west and will gradually turn northwest on the 9th. On the 11th, its center will pass near the northeast coast of Taiwan and enter the northern sea. It is forecast to make landfall on the border of Zhejiang and Fujian provinces at midnight on the 11th. The uncertainty range has narrowed but still includes Miyako Island and half of Taiwan.

Wu Der-rong pointed out that Typhoon Bavi will maintain its "large super typhoon" intensity before approaching Taiwan, and will gradually weaken due to the topographic effects of Taiwan starting from the 11th. The latest European model ensemble simulation tracks are slightly more southerly than the CWA's forecast, with the possibility of the center grazing the northern sea of Taiwan or making contact with the northern landmass. A northward passage near Miyako Island or a southward landfall in the east cannot be ruled out. Different tracks bring different wind and rain threats, but none should be underestimated. The approaching storm is formidable, and preparations for the typhoon should be expedited. (Editor: Chang Ya-ching) 1150708
