Chiayi Drone Logistics Project to Undergo Acceptance Testing End of July, First Commercial Operation in Taiwan

(Central News Agency, Chiayi County, July 8) After one year of testing, the Chiayi Asia-Pacific Drone Logistics Project will undergo review by the Ministry of Economic Affairs at the end of July. The Chiayi County Government's Department of Economic Development stated today that if the review is passed, operations can commence in August, making it Taiwan's first commercial drone logistics and delivery service.

Lin Yu-chih, head of the Industrial Development Section of the Department of Economic Development, told CNA reporters that the county government is actively promoting drone logistics and delivery applications. The testing for the "Chiayi Asia-Pacific Drone Logistics Project," a collaboration with Chunghwa Telecom, Point Point Global Co., Ltd., and the Metal Industries Research and Development Centre, is nearing completion, with acceptance testing by the Ministry of Economic Affairs scheduled for the end of this month.

Lin Yu-chih said the experimental scope and routes cover the Asia-Pacific Drone AI Innovation Application and Development Center in Puzi City, as well as the Meimei Shangshu Pet Park and Rainbow Night Market in Taibao City. After passing the Ministry of Economic Affairs' acceptance testing, operations are expected to begin in August. Drones will transport meals from the Rainbow Night Market to smart lockers at the Pet Park and the Asia-Pacific Drone AI Innovation Application and Development Center.

Lin Yu-chih stated that the ordering and pickup model is similar to the Shopee e-commerce platform. Citizens can scan a QR code to place orders and then pick up their meals at designated locations. This will be Taiwan's first commercial drone logistics and delivery service.

The Department of Economic Development emphasized that they hope to showcase the results to the public next month, allowing citizens to personally experience the practical applications of drone logistics and delivery, and to see drones gradually integrated into daily life.

According to information posted on Chunghwa Telecom's network, the drone logistics project experiment is a collaboration with the Chiayi County Government, a food ordering platform, and drone operators. Three multi-rotor drones will be used for cargo transportation services. Private enterprises are independently developing flight systems and aerial cargo transport applications, while the government provides verification sites and industry development resources to jointly promote the development of smart drone logistics services.
