(CNA reporter Tsai Chih-ming, Chiayi County, July 8) The Forestry Bureau's Chiayi Branch Chuku Turtle Conservation Education Park will be open for 14 visiting events from July 25 to November 26 and from March 11 to May 6 next year, inviting elementary and middle school teachers and students from Yunlin, Chiayi, and Tainan, as well as relevant domestic NGOs, to register and learn about turtle ecology.

Here's an opportunity to understand the role of Taiwanese turtles in the ecosystem and the crises they face. The Chiayi Branch announced today in a press release that the Chuku Turtle Conservation Education Park is now open for visit applications.

The Chiayi Branch explained that the dates and application methods for the park's reservation visits can be found on the website of the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency's Chiayi Branch. Additionally, the Chuku Nature Education Center also organizes irregular turtle conservation education activities. Related courses can be found under the nature education section of the "Taiwan Forest Recreation Network."

The Chiayi Branch pointed out that to strengthen the conservation of native Taiwanese turtles, the Chuku Turtle Conservation Education Park was established in 2019. A team from National Chiayi University was commissioned to manage the park and continuously promote turtle research and environmental education.

The Chiayi Branch stated that Taiwan has five native terrestrial turtle species. In recent years, due to pressures such as habitat loss and illegal hunting and smuggling, wild populations have declined, and their survival faces severe challenges. Besides the commonly known Chinese softshell turtle and Chinese striped-neck turtle, the Chinese box turtle and the brown tortoise are listed as critically endangered conservation wild animals, and the Taiwanese giant salamander is listed as a precious and rare conservation wild animal, urgently requiring public attention to the conservation actions for native Taiwanese turtles.
