SYDNEY, July 8 (CNA) -- A system failure at Telstra Corp. today caused train stoppages and disruptions to taxi payment systems. The government stated that the incident led to the interruption of "a large number of mobile calls and connections."
According to Reuters, trains connecting Melbourne, Australia's second-largest city, with surrounding towns have been suspended. Train operators are advising passengers to postpone their journeys if not essential.
Australian media reported that some passengers were unable to pay their taxi fares, and drivers lost income due to platform outages.
Minister for Emergency Management Kristy McBain said in a statement: "We understand that the telecommunications company is working hard to resolve the issue, and relevant authorities are assisting affected passengers."
Telstra indicated that it is currently investigating the cause of the failure. The telecommunications company also urged users to "try redialing, as you may be able to connect." The company has not yet explained the cause of this failure or when services will be restored. (Compiled by Chi Chin-ling) 1150708
