(London, July 8, CNA, Reuters) German star Alexander Zverev defeated American Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 in straight sets in the Wimbledon quarterfinals today, ending a seven-match losing streak against Fritz and advancing to the semifinals in pursuit of consecutive Grand Slam titles.

Reuters reported that Zverev, 29, won his first Grand Slam title at the French Open early last month. However, prior to today, he had lost seven consecutive matches to Fritz, including a defeat at Wimbledon in 2024.

The new French Open champion and Fritz were seeded second and sixth, respectively, at this year's Wimbledon.

Zverev played steadily under the hot sun today, breaking his opponent's serve first in the opening set to lead 5-4, and after fending off Fritz's final push in the first set, he took the set.

At the start of the second set, 28-year-old Fritz applied for a medical timeout after the first three games due to persistent discomfort in his right knee. After the match resumed, Zverev regained control, successfully broke serve, and put his opponent in a difficult position.

In the third set, Zverev broke serve again at 4-1 with a brilliant backhand winner, ultimately securing an easy victory. This marks his first appearance in the Wimbledon men's singles semifinals and his 12th Grand Slam semifinal appearance.

Another men's singles quarterfinal match was between British rising star Arthur Fery and Italian player Flavio Cobolli.

Fery, 23, defeated Cobolli 6-4, 7-6 (7/4), 6-0 in straight sets to advance to the Wimbledon semifinals, continuing his surprising run. Fery also became the first wildcard entrant in 25 years to reach the men's singles semifinals.

Zverev will face Fery in the semifinals for a spot in the final. (Compiled by Yang Wei-ching) 0709
