(CNA reporter Hong Su-jin, Taipei, July 8) The program "Art Has Something Going On" is launching a migrant worker literature theme, offering a glimpse into diverse life experiences through the writings of migrant workers. Liu Chuan, a winner of the Migrant Worker Literature Award, shared his experiences in Taiwan, frankly admitting that the discrimination and pressure faced by migrant workers in Taiwan might be beyond what Taiwanese people can imagine.
Taiwan is home to 500,000 Southeast Asian migrant workers and 200,000 marriage immigrants. They have long since changed the landscape of this island, yet few have truly heard them tell their Taiwan stories in their native languages. PTS's "Art Has Something Going On" presents "Migrant Worker Literature: They Tell Their Taiwan Stories in Their Native Languages."
The "Migrant Worker Literature Award," founded in 2014, is Taiwan's first writing award focused on migrant workers. It encourages migrant workers from Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Myanmar, and other countries to write about their lives in Taiwan in their native languages.
The program specifically interviewed Liu Chuan, a winner of the Migrant Worker Literature Award. According to the press release, Liu Chuan, originally from Thailand, has a background in natural language processing but repeatedly encountered language and systemic barriers in Taiwan. He created "Have You Bathed?" in Thai, describing the loneliness and pressure he felt as a foreign white-collar worker. He admitted that the discrimination and pressure faced by these migrant workers in Taiwan might be beyond what Taiwanese people can imagine, but he believes, "By loving oneself, problems can be slowly resolved, the current situation changed, and those around us transformed."
"Migrant Worker Literature: They Tell Their Taiwan Stories in Their Native Languages" is available on the "Art Has Something Going On" YouTube channel and the PTS+ video platform. (Editor: Li Hengshan) 1150708
