Taipei, July 8 (CNA) The ivory conch is a high-value aquatic product in Taiwan. In recent years, catches have decreased, and market prices have risen year by year. The Fisheries Research Institute of the Ministry of Agriculture recently released over 50,000 artificially cultivated ivory conch seedlings in the waters of Penghu to supplement wild populations.

The Ministry of Agriculture announced today in a press release that the Penghu Marine Biology Research Center of the Fisheries Research Institute, in order to promote the restoration of marine fishery resources, released over 50,000 artificially bred and cultivated ivory conch seedlings in appropriate sea areas of Penghu from May to June. This aims to supplement wild populations and promote the sustainable use of fishery resources in the Penghu waters.

The Fisheries Research Institute stated that the ivory conch is one of the economically valuable shellfish in the coastal waters of southwestern Taiwan and Penghu. It is characterized by rapid growth, delicious meat, and high market value, and is widely welcomed by the public.

The Fisheries Research Institute said that in recent years, affected by factors such as fishing pressure and habitat environmental changes, the catch of ivory conch has gradually decreased, and market prices have also risen year by year, approaching NT$1,000 per kilogram.

The Fisheries Research Institute believes that producing healthy seedlings through artificial breeding and cultivation technology, and releasing them in appropriate sea areas for resource enhancement, is an important measure to promote the recovery of fishery resources. The institute is also transferring the established ivory conch seedling cultivation technology and promoting it to private aquaculture operators.

The Fisheries Research Institute stated that the waters of Penghu have a rich and diverse marine ecological environment, serving as an important area for Taiwan's fishery production and a habitat for marine organisms. In addition to ivory conch, in recent years, seedlings have also been continuously cultivated and released for other important sessile species in Penghu waters, including the Charybdis feriata, the Busycon perversum, the Turbo petholatus, and the Tripneustes gratilla.
