(CNA Taipei, Aug. 8) Singer Chiu Chun and five others were indicted today by the Taipei District Prosecutors Office on charges of mob violence and brawling in a public place. The incident occurred in February when Chiu and his friends were drinking at a bar in Taipei City and got into a dispute with three other individuals, leading to a physical altercation.

According to the indictment, Chiu, along with friends surnamed Wang and Chen, visited a bar on Chang'an East Road, Section 1, Taipei City, on February 8. Also present in the bar were men surnamed Lin, Li, and Niu. Around 7 p.m. that evening, Wang and Niu got into an argument over a trivial matter, and the six men engaged in a fistfight inside the bar.

The Taipei District Prosecutors Office concluded its investigation today and indicted Chiu and the five others on charges of mob violence and brawling in a public place or a place accessible to the public, as stipulated by the Criminal Code. Lin, Li, and Niu also filed charges of assault, but as they did not submit medical certificates, the prosecution decided not to indict them on those charges.

Separately, on December 27, 2024, Chiu was involved in a drunk driving incident in Keelung City, which resulted in the death of a taxi driver. In April of this year, the Keelung District Court sentenced Chiu to 10 years of imprisonment for drunk driving causing death and hit-and-run resulting in death. The case is currently under appeal at the Taiwan High Court. (Editor: Chang Ya-ching) 08072024
