(CNA reporter Chen Chih-chung Taipei, July 8) Executive Yuan Minister-without-Portfolio Ji Liancheng visited the Ministry of Education today to inspect drug abuse prevention efforts. He announced that he would coordinate with various agencies to provide full support for the Ministry of Education in establishing a saliva screening mechanism to prevent emerging drugs such as etomidate from harming students' minds and bodies.

The Ministry of Education issued a press release today stating that Ji Liancheng invited representatives from the Ministry of Justice, the National Police Agency of the Ministry of the Interior, and the Ministry of Health and Welfare to inspect campus drug abuse prevention work.

According to the Ministry of Education, Ji Liancheng requested that prevention measures be continuously improved under the premise of respecting school autonomy and balancing the rights and interests of teachers and students. This includes strengthening patrols around campus hotspots and school-police cooperation agreements for campus security to enhance anti-drug capabilities on campus.

Ji Liancheng pointed out that preventing emerging drugs is a long-term and continuous effort that cannot be accomplished by the education system alone. The Executive Yuan will coordinate with relevant agencies to fully support the Ministry of Education in establishing a saliva screening mechanism, strengthening intelligence integration and drug source tracing, and improving subsequent medical treatment, rehabilitation, and counseling to jointly prevent emerging drugs from harming the physical and mental health of young students.

The Ministry of Education is currently revising the "Key Points for Urine Screening and Counseling of Specific Personnel in Schools at All Levels." Under the premise of ensuring student and parent informed consent, it plans to include "saliva screening" as an alternative screening option, adding another testing tool to the current "urine screening" to detect students with drug abuse at an early stage.
