TAIPEI (CNA) - As Typhoon Maysak approaches Taiwan, government agencies are on high alert. Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) announced today that it has mobilized a total of 7,316 personnel, 3,325 vehicles, and 6,634 various pieces of equipment across its power supply, generation, and distribution systems. Minister of Economic Affairs Kung Ming-hsin urged local governments to implement flood prevention measures such as clearing drainage ditches and preemptively draining flood control reservoirs.
The Economic Affairs Committee of the Legislative Yuan today invited Minister of Economic Affairs Kung Ming-hsin to report on "Guidance Strategies for Assisting Overseas Taiwanese Businesses in Responding to Geopolitical Changes and Regional Economic Integration" and the "National Power Supply and Demand Report," and to answer questions.
Speaking to reporters before the meeting, Kung Ming-hsin stated that the Water Resources Agency held its second flood prevention preparation meeting yesterday, connecting with all regional branches and local government water management units to understand the situation. He also reminded local governments to clear drainage ditches, preemptively drain flood control reservoirs, and ensure the normal operation of equipment such as water pumps.
In addition, Taipower issued a press release stating that it has completed line inspections, tree and branch trimming, and pole base reinforcement, and has implemented disaster prevention equipment and material inventory. For power outages that may be caused by the typhoon, it will quickly activate an inter-regional support mechanism based on wind and rain conditions to minimize the impact.
Taipower mentioned that for some mountainous and outlying island areas prone to disasters, it has proactively dispatched repair personnel and equipment in advance to be ready to respond to sudden disasters at any time. Currently, all units have completed operational tests of vehicles, equipment, and communication devices, and have ensured smooth communication mechanisms with all levels of government, including central and local governments. Disaster relief resources, both internal and external, have been fully integrated to facilitate immediate response.
Taipower urges the public to prepare for the typhoon by securing signs and removing hanging objects. If fallen or exposed power lines are found, do not touch them and immediately notify Taipower for handling. For basements in areas prone to water accumulation, it is recommended to install waterproof gates or pile up sandbags to prevent flooding. For facilities that cannot experience power outages, such as pumping stations, or users who require life support equipment for 24 hours, it is essential to prepare generators or uninterruptible power supply equipment in advance.
Taipower stated that if the public encounters a power outage due to a typhoon, they can report it or check the latest progress through Taipower's official website "Natural Disaster Power Outage Information Zone" or by calling the customer service hotline "1911." Taipower will restore power as quickly as possible.
Taipower pointed out that if the typhoon causes a power outage, the restoration process will proceed step-by-step based on the principle of "power supply hubs, main lines, and branch lines," prioritizing the restoration of public utilities such as the MRT, trains, tap water, and telephone communications.
