2026 World Cup Key News

NEW YORK, July 8 (CNA) - Organizers confirmed today that Canadian pop superstar Justin Bieber will join the lineup for the first-ever "World Cup Final Halftime Show," with the entire halftime show performance lasting 11 minutes.

According to Agence France-Presse, Bieber will share the stage with pop icon Madonna, Latin superstar Shakira, and Korean group BTS for the World Cup Final halftime show on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, which will be modeled after the American football Super Bowl.

The performance is being creatively directed by Chris Martin, lead singer of Coldplay. This marks the first time a halftime performance has been scheduled for the World Cup Final, raising questions about whether the halftime break will be extended.

According to football competition rules, the halftime break "shall not exceed 15 minutes." Although the official performance is only 11 minutes long, considering the time required for stage setup and dismantling, the break may still need to be extended.

FIFA trialed a halftime show last year at the final of the FIFA Club World Cup, also held at MetLife Stadium. The entire halftime break was extended to 24 minutes at that time, leading to some questioning whether it could affect player performance.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino stated that the Final Halftime Show will be "absolutely the biggest stage ever" and is expected to attract "billions" of viewers.

The halftime show will also feature characters from "Sesame Street" and "The Muppets" to support FIFA's "Global Citizen Education Fund." This initiative aims to raise $100 million during the World Cup to help children worldwide gain greater access to educational resources.

Bieber said in a statement: "The World Cup brings the world together in a way that no other event can. I am honored to be a part of the halftime performance. What makes me even happier is that this event is already helping to expand educational opportunities for children globally."

Hugh Evans, founder and CEO of the halftime show organizer, the anti-poverty advocacy group Global Citizen, said this will be the largest gathering of artists for a single charitable cause since the "Live Aid" concert in 1985, and it is expected to be the most-watched 11-minute performance in history.
