Women's Kabaddi Aims for Asian Games Gold, Head Coach: "Winning Gold is the Only Goal"

(CNA, Taipei, July 9) - The National Sports Training Center held its media day for the Nagoya Asian Games today. The women's kabaddi team, which won silver last time, is unanimously aiming for gold this year. Head coach Cai Weiyang stated that these female athletes have dedicated many years, "I can't think of any other option besides winning gold."

At the last Hangzhou Asian Games, Taiwan's women's kabaddi representative team lost to powerhouse India by 1 point in the final, settling for silver. Despite setting a new record for women's kabaddi in the Asian Games, the entire team shed tears of regret.

In last year's Kabaddi World Cup, Taiwan's women's representative team also took silver after losing to India in the final. These successive defeats have only made the girls more resilient.

Cai Weiyang told the media, "This group of players has been with me for a long time. Most of them have transitioned from students to working professionals but are still willing to come back and fight. Many are here because their goals haven't been achieved yet."

He mentioned that over the past 12 years, these athletes have progressed from "wanting to win one match" to "only wanting to beat India," and now to "only wanting to win the gold medal." Everyone's attitude is firm, so this year's goal is solely the gold medal.

Cai Weiyang also revealed that their biggest rival is still India. "After all, they are physically well-built, tall, and possess both strength and speed. So, I'm doing everything I can to study the opponents, analyze their weaknesses, and then tell the players to strengthen their practice."

Cai Weiyang pointed out that the women's team has a problem: they like to be the challengers and are not used to being challenged. "So, in the preliminary rounds of the Asian Games, facing opponents with slightly weaker skills might make us sweat. In these crucial matches, we must quickly get into gear and find our rhythm."
