Hong Kong, July 9 (CNA) -- After U.S. President Donald Trump recently announced that the interim agreement between the U.S. and Iran to end the war has been "terminated," the U.S. Central Command stated it is launching a new round of strikes against Iran. Markets continue to watch the developments in the Middle East, and Asian stocks closed mixed today.
According to Agence France-Presse, after the U.S. and Iran exchanged fire again in the Middle East region yesterday, Trump announced that the interim agreement between the U.S. and Iran to end the war has "ended." The U.S. simultaneously revoked the temporary sanctions exemption on Iranian oil.
Prices for the two major crude oil futures surged over 8% yesterday, raising concerns about soaring inflation and economic impact.
However, Trump stated earlier today that he expects the U.S.-Iran conflict to end "soon," saying Tehran "just called" and Iran is "very eager to reach an agreement," but did not disclose further details such as who he spoke with.
International oil prices retreated partially today, and investors continue to pay attention to the developments in the Middle East.
Looking at the major indices of Asian stock markets, Tokyo, Shanghai, Seoul, and Wellington closed higher; Hong Kong, Taipei, Sydney, and Manila closed lower. (Compiled by Hung Chi-yuan) 1150709
