BEIJING (CNA) -- China has launched a cultural and tourism consumption season during the summer holidays, with plans to issue over 450 million yuan (approximately 2.115 billion New Taiwan dollars) in consumption vouchers and special subsidies to stimulate cultural and tourism spending across the country.
According to reports from mainland Chinese media including Beijing Business Today, China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism yesterday launched the 2026 National Summer Culture and Tourism Consumption Season in Qinghai. From early July to the end of August, the ministry will collaborate with relevant departments, businesses, and platforms to introduce measures covering tourism, summer retreats, travel, and sporting events.
During this period, various regions will increase the supply of cultural and tourism products catering to demands for summer retreats, coastal vacations, the night-time economy, cruise travel, family entertainment, study tours, intangible cultural heritage cuisine, and museum visits. Over 30,000 cultural and tourism consumption activities will be organized.
Compared to the over 570 million yuan in summer cultural and tourism consumption subsidies issued in 2025, the scale of cultural and tourism consumption vouchers deployed by Chinese authorities this year has been reduced by 120 million yuan.
Many regions in China are preparing for the peak summer consumption season, with Guangdong, Yunnan, Shaanxi, Luoyang, and Hangzhou recently issuing various types of consumption vouchers.
Shaanxi recently launched its summer cultural and tourism consumption season, with the province issuing cultural and tourism benefit cards and consumption vouchers totaling 58 million yuan. Yunnan began issuing cultural and tourism consumption vouchers on June 29, with a total annual allocation of 70 million yuan.
China is promoting the cultural tourism industry as an emerging strategic pillar industry. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism yesterday released the "15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030) for Building a Strong Tourism Nation," proposing that by 2030, the number of annual domestic trips by Chinese residents will reach 8.3 billion, and total domestic tourism spending will exceed 7.7 trillion yuan.
