(Central News Agency, Los Angeles, July 8, Comprehensive Foreign News) The nominations for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards were announced today, with the popular medical drama "The Pitt" and the dark comedy series "Hacks" emerging as the big winners. The Emmy Awards are often referred to as the Oscars of television.
According to Agence France-Presse, "The Pitt" received a total of 25 nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series, leading the pack. "Hacks," in its 5th and final season, garnered 24 nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series.
These two productions have delivered impressive results for the streaming platform HBO Max. HBO Max secured a total of 122 nominations this year, topping all platforms, while streaming giant Netflix ranked second with 111 nominations.
"The Pitt," which explores issues such as abortion rights, immigration crackdowns, and mass shootings, had a lukewarm reception upon its initial release but quickly gained popularity through word-of-mouth.
Noah Wyle, who rose to fame with "ER," has once again been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role in "The Pitt" this year.
Vince Gilligan, the producer and writer of "Breaking Bad," has received 18 nominations for his sci-fi series "Pluribus" on Apple TV+.
The series is set in a post-apocalyptic world where most humans have merged into a peaceful, happy "collective consciousness" after being infected by an alien virus, with only 13 individuals possessing immunity for unknown reasons.
Rhea Seehorn, who is considered a strong contender for an award, previously won Best Actress in a Drama Series at the Golden Globe Awards and Critics' Choice Awards earlier this year for "Pluribus."
In addition to "The Pitt," other contenders for Outstanding Drama Series include the political drama "The Diplomat" starring Keri Russell, "Slow Horses," and the "Game of Thrones" prequel "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms."
In the comedy series category, "Hacks" leads with 24 nominations. The plot revolves around a stand-up comedian striving to revive her career and her love-hate working relationship with her millennial writers.
Lead actress Jean Smart has previously won the Emmy Award 4 times for her role as Deborah Vance and is once again nominated this year. Co-star Hannah Einbinder, who won last year for the first time, has also received a nomination again this year.
Apple TV+'s new horror-comedy "Widow's Bay" has made a surprising debut, receiving 19 nominations. Matthew Rhys plays a small-town mayor in the series who is determined to turn a supposedly cursed island off the coast of New England into a tourist destination.
Other nominees for Outstanding Comedy Series include "Shrinking" and the dark comedy "The Bear," which tells the story of a genius chef returning to Chicago to turn around the fate of his family restaurant.
"The Bear" has accumulated 21 Emmy Awards over its first 4 seasons, including two wins for Jeremy Allen White for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. However, the final season received mixed reviews, and Jeremy Allen White was not nominated this year.
Netflix series "Beef" and Disney+ series "Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr and Carolyn Bessette" will compete for Outstanding Limited Series.
The 78th Emmy Awards ceremony will be held in Los Angeles on September 14, hosted by veteran actress Mariska Hargitay. (Compiled by: Liu Wenyu) 1150709
