(Central News Agency, reporter Chang Yi-lien, Kaohsiung, July 9) A wanted fugitive, identified by his surname Chen, was apprehended today in Kaohsiung's Nanzi District after injuring himself in an attempt to resist arrest. Police fired six warning shots into the air and used pepper spray to subdue him before he was taken for medical treatment. Chen is in no life-threatening condition and will be transferred to the authorities for legal proceedings.

Officers from the Kaohsiung City Police Department's Nanzi Precinct explained that the 52-year-old Chen was sentenced to 11 years in prison for drug offenses and had failed to report for his sentence, leading the Kaohsiung District Prosecutors Office to issue a warrant for his arrest.

Police stated that around 5 p.m., Chen was riding a motorcycle and was stopped by officers at the intersection of Chuangxin Road and Tuku Road in Nanzi District for a traffic violation. In an effort to resist arrest, Chen used a utility knife to cut his own neck.

Police mentioned that the situation was critical at the time. Officers fired six shots into the air as a warning and used superior force and pepper spray to subdue Chen. They collectively restrained him and took him to the hospital for treatment. He is not in life-threatening condition.

Police added that Chen will undergo a rapid drug test to determine if he was driving under the influence of drugs. He will subsequently be transferred to the Kaohsiung District Prosecutors Office for legal proceedings. (Editor: Huang Ming-hsi) 1150709
