Han Kuo-yu Meets Panamanian Congressional Delegation, Hopes to Deepen Cooperation in Various Fields

(CNA) - Taipei, July 9 - Legislative Yuan President Han Kuo-yu met with a cross-party Panamanian congressional delegation today. He stated that Taiwan imports a large amount of white shrimp from Panama annually, demonstrating a strong foundation for bilateral economic and trade relations. He expressed hope for continued deepening of cooperation in areas such as economy, trade, technology, and industry, to create more mutually beneficial development opportunities and enhance the well-being of the people of both nations.

Han Kuo-yu, accompanied by KMT Legislator Chang Chia-chun, TPP Legislator Tsai Chun-chu, and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Chen Ming-chi, met with the cross-party Panamanian congressional delegation in the afternoon.

Han Kuo-yu thanked the Panamanian cross-party congressional members for making a special trip to Taiwan despite the impending typhoon, which fully demonstrates their regard for and support of Taiwan. Taiwan and Panama share over a century of deep friendship. Although bilateral official relations have seen changes in recent years, the friendship between the people and between democratic partners remains evergreen.

Han Kuo-yu pointed out that Taiwan imports a large amount of white shrimp from Panama annually, accounting for nearly 40% of the total white shrimp imported nationwide, indicating a strong foundation for bilateral economic and trade relations. Taiwan possesses world-class competitiveness in fields such as semiconductors, high-quality medical care, small and medium-sized enterprises, and functional textiles. He expressed hope for continued deepening of cooperation in areas such as economy, trade, technology, and industry, to create more mutually beneficial development opportunities and enhance the well-being of the people of both nations.

Head of the delegation, Panamanian Congressman and Chairman of the Agriculture and Fisheries Committee Orlando Carrasquilla (also translated as Kalasijia), stated that during this visit, they deeply felt the warmth and friendliness of the Taiwanese people and witnessed Taiwan's outstanding achievements in fields such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), sports, and technological development, which left the delegation with a profound sense of the deep friendship between Taiwan and Panama.

Carrasquilla noted that Taiwan and Panama share over a century of friendship. Although bilateral official relations have faced challenges, the friendship between the people has always remained unchanged. He looks forward to continued deepening of bilateral exchanges and working together in more areas.

Panamanian Congressman Medín Jiménez Pitti stated that the over a century of historical friendship between Taiwan and Panama is precious. Upon returning to Panama, the delegation will actively promote the establishment of a Panamanian Congressional Friendship Group with Taiwan to continue deepening parliamentary exchanges between the two sides.

He pointed out that Panama possesses advantages such as rich natural resources, the Panama Canal, and the Colón Free Trade Zone. He looks forward to attracting more Taiwanese enterprises to invest, jointly promoting economic development and the well-being of the people.

In response, Han Kuo-yu stated that if the Panamanian Congress establishes a friendship group with Taiwan, he will also encourage legislators from both ruling and opposition parties to simultaneously promote the establishment of a Panamanian Congressional Friendship Association to further strengthen parliamentary interaction between the two sides.
