(CNA reporter Chang Hsiung-feng Taipei, July 9) The Central Weather Administration (CWA) officially launched its "Giant Wave" warning system at the start of this typhoon season. Today marks the first issuance of this warning, due to the influence of Typhoon Bavi. Pingtung, Yilan, Hualien, and Taitung regions may experience dangerous giant waves tonight through tomorrow morning, with wave heights potentially exceeding 6 meters.

The CWA explained that a "giant wave" is defined as a wave height exceeding 6 meters. The areas covered by this giant wave warning are Pingtung, Yilan, Hualien, and Taitung. The public is urged to immediately stay away from the coast, refrain from going to the beach to watch waves, and to quickly evacuate from high-risk areas such as seawalls, river mouths, harbors, and coastal roads.

To enhance the safety of coastal residents and strengthen disaster preparedness awareness during typhoons, the CWA officially implemented the giant wave warning system this year. After a warning is issued, the information will be sent via the Disaster Prevention and Protection System as a cell broadcast message to mobile phones of people within the alert area. Related information can also be accessed through the CWA's official website. (Editor: Chen Ching-fang) 1150709
