(CNA Tokyo, 9th, Foreign News) Super Typhoon Bavi is expected to maintain its current intensity and approach Japan's Okinawa Sakishima Islands on the 10th and 11th. The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned that strong gusts capable of toppling some houses will hit parts of Okinawa starting on the 10th, and coastal areas must also be vigilant against giant waves and storm surges.
According to a report by Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK), based on the typhoon track forecast map released by the Japan Meteorological Agency today at 12:45 PM (11:45 AM Taipei time), Bavi was located east of the Philippines at noon today. Its central pressure was 930 hectopascals, with a maximum sustained wind speed of 50 meters per second, maximum instantaneous wind speed of 70 meters per second, and a radius of 280 kilometers within the storm's core where winds exceed 25 meters per second. It is moving northwest by west at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour.
Typhoon Bavi is forecast to maintain its fierce power and approach areas such as Miyako Island and Ishigaki Island in Okinawa Prefecture from the 10th to the 11th.
The Japan Meteorological Agency specifically reminds the public to remain highly vigilant against disasters such as strong winds, giant waves, storm surges, and landslides. It strongly recommends completing typhoon preparations today and evacuating to safe locations such as sturdy buildings before the wind and rain intensify.
According to a report by Japan's TBS Television, due to the typhoon's impact, Japan Airlines (JAL) has canceled 48 flights on the 10th to and from Naha Airport, Miyako Airport, and Ishigaki Airport in Okinawa, as well as flights between Kagoshima Airport and the remote islands of Kagoshima. An estimated 7,600 people will be affected.
Other airlines have also stated that subsequent flights may be affected by the typhoon and urge passengers to check the latest updates through their official websites at any time.
Ferry services connecting Ishigaki Island and surrounding remote islands have been suspended entirely starting today. Port workers are rushing to secure vessels with ropes, and swimming is prohibited at all beaches as preparations for the typhoon are gradually being made.
The Okinawa Meteorological Observatory pointed out that the power of Typhoon Bavi could be comparable to Typhoon Goni in 2015, which caused severe damage to Ishigaki Island and Yonaguni Island, urging the public to be extremely cautious.
In addition, the Okinawa Prefectural Government has established a Disaster Response Headquarters and is strengthening response measures for remote islands that may become isolated due to power outages or communication disruptions.
According to a report by "Okinawa Times," the education committees of Ishigaki City, Taketomi Town, and Yonaguni Town in Okinawa Prefecture, as well as a private elementary school in Ishigaki City, have decided to temporarily close all elementary and junior high schools on the 10th.
In addition, three prefectural high schools, including Yaeyama High School, Yaeyama Agricultural and Forestry High School, and Yaeyama Commercial High School, as well as Yaeyama Special Needs School, located in Ishigaki City, will also be closed simultaneously. Dormitories at each school will be temporarily closed by this evening, and boarding students will need to return home or temporarily stay with relatives and friends in the city.
According to reports from the Japan meteorological information website tenki.jp and Fuji News Network (FNN), affected by the typhoon, a high-pressure system is covering the Honshu area. From Kyushu, Kinki, Tokai, Kanto to southern Tohoku, clear and sunny weather is expected everywhere.
Under strong sunlight, various places will successively experience "Manatsu-bi" (days with temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius), and some inland areas may even experience "Mōsho-bi" (days with temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius), with temperatures potentially soaring to around 35 degrees Celsius, posing a high risk of heatstroke.
According to the definition of the Japan Meteorological Agency, a "Natsu-bi" is a day with a maximum temperature of 25 degrees Celsius or higher, a "Manatsu-bi" is 30 degrees Celsius or higher, a "Mōsho-bi" is 35 degrees Celsius or higher, and a "Kōsho-bi" is 40 degrees Celsius or higher.
The report indicates that temperatures will continue to rise, with forecast maximum temperatures of 37 degrees Celsius in Hita City, Oita Prefecture, and 36 degrees Celsius in Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture. The number of observation points expected to experience "Manatsu-bi" (above 30 degrees Celsius) will exceed 400, setting a new record for this season. Currently, seven prefectures, mainly in Kyushu, have issued "Heatstroke Alert Warnings."
This intense heatwave is expected to continue until early next week. The report adds that particularly in Saga City, the forecast maximum temperature for this Sunday could reach 38 degrees Celsius, experiencing extreme heat that surpasses human body temperature. (Compiled by Li Jing) 1150709
