The 2026 FIFA World Cup will see a marquee showdown between Spain and France. Coinciding with the eve of the tournament, today marks the 19th birthday of Spanish teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, who hopes to emulate his rival Kylian Mbappe, who won the World Cup at the same age.
According to AFP, Yamal will face Mbappe-led France in the semifinals. Mbappe scored a goal in the 2018 World Cup final, helping France defeat Croatia 4-2 to claim the title. At 19 years and 207 days, he became the second-youngest player to score in a World Cup final, after Pele (17 years old in 1958).
Since then, Mbappe has become synonymous with the World Cup, representing France in three consecutive tournaments. This, however, is Yamal’s first World Cup. While Mbappe has already scored 8 goals in this edition, Yamal has only one goal to his name.
Nonetheless, Yamal has already made a name for himself on the big stage. In the 2024 UEFA European Championship semifinal against France, led by Mbappe, he scored a stunning goal to help Spain win 2-1.
That goal came four days before his 17th birthday. Spain went on to defeat England and win the European Championship, with Yamal named the tournament’s Best Young Player.
Despite his youth, Yamal clearly aims to leave a lasting impression at this World Cup. Perhaps due to excessive eagerness, he suffered a hamstring injury that caused him to miss his club’s end-of-season matches, raising doubts about his availability for the World Cup kickoff.
Playing for La Liga powerhouse FC Barcelona, Yamal admitted in late May: 'I was worried the injury might be serious, and even if not, recurring issues could have kept me out of the World Cup.'
Yamal came off the bench in his tournament debut, as Spain drew 0-0 with Cape Verde. He then started against Saudi Arabia, scoring one goal in a 4-0 victory, but was substituted at halftime. Since then, he has started every match but failed to score again, which may be affecting his confidence.
Spain captain Rodri said yesterday: 'I think (Yamal) sometimes needs to calm his anxiety, because he’s too eager to prove how important he is to the team.'
Rodri added: 'Since he already showed maturity in that European Championship, and is now two years older, we shouldn’t be surprised by his abilities.'
Due to Yamal’s limited impact so far, Spain has lacked the sharp, direct attacking play that overwhelmed opponents during the European Championship. In contrast, France has regained its cutting edge and now boasts the most dynamic attacking force in the tournament.
The 27-year-old Mbappe is tied with Lionel Messi for the Golden Boot with 8 goals, just one goal shy of Messi’s all-time World Cup career record of 21 goals.
A 'hat-trick' originally referred to a cricket bowler dismissing three batters consecutively but is now commonly used in football to describe a single player scoring three or more goals in one match.
Both Yamal and Mbappe are household names in their countries and globally, representing the face of modern European multiculturalism.
Mbappe, with more experience and a World Cup title, speaks confidently in English and has become one of the tournament’s defining figures.
Yamal’s off-field fame is still catching up, but his on-pitch record against Mbappe is impressive. Over the past two years, the two have frequently faced off, as Yamal’s Barcelona and Mbappe’s Real Madrid are fierce rivals. To date, across club and national team matches, Yamal has won 8 out of 10 games against Mbappe. (Translation: Kuo Hsiang-Ping) 1150713
