(Central News Agency reporter Ho Hsiu-ling, Taipei, July 13) The Taiwan stock market surged nearly 1,000 points in early trading today, reflecting gains in U.S. and Asian markets during its closure, briefly surpassing the 46,000-point mark. However, as profit-taking selling pressure emerged and Asian markets fluctuated, the index's gains narrowed, with intraday volatility reaching 1,058.01 points. The weighted index closed up 25.91 points at 45,380.52, a 0.06% increase, with a total trading value of NT$1.0125716 trillion.

Performance among large-cap stocks diverged: TSMC closed up NT$25 at NT$2,440; MediaTek dropped NT$100 to NT$3,825; Hon Hai fell NT$1 to NT$236.5; Delta Electronics rose NT$10 to NT$1,890.

TSMC announced its June revenue today, totaling NT$442.68 billion, up 6.2% month-on-month and 67.9% year-on-year, setting a new monthly record.

The electronics sector index fell 0.07%, and the financial sector index dropped 0.49%. The GreTai Securities Market Index, representing small and mid-cap stocks, opened high but closed down 1.2%.

Optical stocks performed strongly today. Largan Precision, the stock king, opened at the daily limit of NT$4,345 and remained locked at the upper limit. United Opto reached its daily limit at NT$74.30. Advanced Optics briefly hit the limit at NT$198 before pulling back, closing up 4.72% at NT$188.5.

The Formosa Plastics Group ("Four Jewels") showed strong performance: Formosa Plastics and Nan Ya reached their daily limits at NT$60.2 and NT$199.5, respectively; Formosa Chemicals & Fibre rose 7.31%, and Formosa Chemical rose 8.33%.

Wanbao Investment Consulting CEO Wang Jung-hsu told the Central News Agency that market attention is focused on TSMC's upcoming earnings call on the 16th, which is expected to deliver positive content. Combined with TSMC's after-market release of June revenue—forecasted to hit another record—TSMC is expected to be a key support for the broader market.

He said the market's focus will now shift to TSMC's Q2 financial results and its outlook for the second half of the year. Currently, institutional investors generally expect results to exceed market expectations, which could help sustain market performance.

However, Wang also cautioned that the market is no longer fully driven by fundamentals. Recently, companies like Samsung Electronics and Micron reported strong earnings, yet their stock prices fell afterward, indicating a dulled market reaction to positive news. At this stage, market movements are increasingly influenced by positioning and technical factors. (Edited by Huang Kuo-lun) 1150713
