Central News Agency Report
(CNA reporter Kuo Hsuan-wen, Hsinchu County, 13th) The Hsinchu District Court has ruled not guilty in the first trial for Hsinchu County Magistrate Yang Wen-ke and others accused of favoring a construction company that caused the Zhubei sinkhole incident. The Hsinchu District Prosecutors' Office said it will legally assess whether to appeal after receiving the complete judgment.
Fong Yi Construction was involved in cutting corners during construction, leading to a sinkhole that endangered public safety. Yang Wen-ke and other public officials were accused of dereliction of duty and favoring Fong Yi Construction for personal gain. The Hsinchu District Prosecutors indicted Yang Wen-ke and 11 others. The Hsinchu District Court announced its verdict at 4 p.m. today, acquitting Yang Wen-ke on charges of gaining illegal benefits. Fong Yi Construction's chairman, Liu Shu-chu, was sentenced to three years and six months for violating building technical regulations.
In response, Magistrate Yang Wen-ke stated in writing that the Zhubei sinkhole incident caused public anxiety and safety concerns, and as county magistrate, he takes full responsibility. He emphasized that he did not receive any illegal benefits, nor did he engage in quid pro quo with developers or seek personal gain, and the court's judgment reflects this.
Fong Yi Construction released a statement expressing respect for the judicial process but regret over the first-instance verdict. The company said it will appeal after receiving the full judgment and completing its legal assessment, to protect the legitimate rights of the company and related personnel.
The Hsinchu County Government stated in a written statement that its administration has acted in accordance with the law. All aspects of building management, public safety supervision, and neighbor-impact response measures have been implemented according to established regulations and professional appraisals.
The Hsinchu District Prosecutors' Office stated it respects the court's ruling and will assess whether to appeal after receiving the full reasoning of the judgment. (Edited by Lin Shu-hui) 1150713
