China's state-run CCTV has criticized Raymond Greene, Director of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), as a 'notorious overlord with a history of misconduct.' In response, Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated today that Taiwan is a sovereign and independent nation with the right to interact with other democratic countries. Greene represents the U.S. in engagements with Taiwan, and bilateral communication remains smooth—there is no need for the Chinese Communist Party to intervene.
Media reports indicate that following Chinese Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Chen Bin-hua's series of negative remarks against Greene on the 8th, CCTV's new media platform 'Riyue Tantian' published an article on the evening of the 13th accusing Greene of 'stirring cross-strait confrontation, promoting resistance to unification by force, and hollowing out Taiwan’s economic lifeline.'
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hsiao Kuo-wei, during a regular press briefing this morning, responded to media inquiries by stating that China criticizes and opposes any interaction between Taiwan and other free democratic nations, regardless of the nature of the activity.
Hsiao reiterated that the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the People's Republic of China are not subordinate to one another. As a sovereign nation, Taiwan inherently has the right to engage with other free and democratic nations around the world.
He added that Raymond Greene, representing the U.S., maintains communication with Taiwan. The current cooperation is problem-free and highly effective, and there is no need for China to comment. (Editor: Yang Kai-xiang) 1150714
