(Central News Agency reporter Lu Tai-cheng, Taitung County, August 14) Typhoon Bavi brought foehn winds and strong gusts to Taitung, causing damage to crops. The Council of Agriculture's Taitung District Agricultural Improvement Station urges farmers to promptly resume cultivation and reconstruction efforts to minimize losses.
Today, the Taitung District Agricultural Improvement Station issued an official website announcement, calling on farmers to implement recovery measures after the typhoon, including clearing broken branches and fallen fruits from fields, properly pruning branches, and strengthening disease prevention for all crops to prevent pathogen invasion and infection.
The Taitung District Agricultural Improvement Station stated that this typhoon primarily caused damage from foehn winds. Orchards affected by foehn winds or salt spray should enhance irrigation (sprinkler irrigation) to replenish moisture lost by fruit trees and wash off salt residue from leaves. If strong winds have broken branches, damaged limbs should be pruned, larger wounds coated with protective agents, and broken branches, fallen leaves, and fruits removed from orchards to reduce sources of pests and diseases.
Currently, it is the pollination period for sugar apples (Annona squamosa). Farmers are advised to increase the frequency of artificial pollination to ensure fruit set. Strengthen disease prevention efforts, especially for anthracnose and fruit rot in sugar apples. After wind and rain, citrus fruits and pomelos should pay attention to the occurrence and prevention of bacterial canker.
Regarding rice, if field embankments or irrigation channels are damaged or blocked by debris, they should be promptly repaired and cleaned to facilitate effective water management.
For betel leaf and vegetable fields, farmers should promptly inspect their plots, reinforce or straighten trellises for fruiting vegetables, and ensure adequate water supply.
