(CNA, Geneva, April 14 - international news report) The United Nations (UN) today condemned renewed hostilities in the Middle East, warning that the re-closure of the Strait of Hormuz would have significant human rights impacts beyond the Middle East region.
After U.S. President Donald Trump vowed to reinstate maritime blockades against Iran, American forces launched a new round of military strikes against Iran today, while Tehran retaliated by attacking multiple targets within Middle Eastern countries.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk stated that the resumption of conflict is a "major setback for civilians both within and beyond the region."
Turk warned that Iran's announcement to close the Strait of Hormuz will "impact human rights beyond this region."
In his statement, he emphasized that this critical energy corridor is an "essential lifeline for millions of people," and stressed that disruptions to the transport of food, medicine, and other essential goods would have severe socioeconomic and humanitarian consequences.
Turk called on Washington and Tehran to immediately cease hostilities and restore a ceasefire. (Translation: Hung Chi-yuan) 1150715
