Central News Agency, San Francisco, 13th — According to international wire reports, over 200 economists and AI researchers issued an open letter today urging that 'immediate action must be taken' to establish incentives, safeguards, and institutions to address the risks that artificial intelligence (AI) could reshape the economy and leave more people facing unemployment.
As reported by the Associated Press, the statement was co-signed by leading economists, computer scientists, and senior executives from technology companies including Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI.
The open letter, initiated by Stanford University’s Digital Economy Lab, states: 'In the next 10 years, AI may become more powerful… potentially driving an unprecedented economic transformation, larger in scale than the Industrial Revolution and faster in pace. This may bring the risk of mass unemployment, but also opportunities, such as dramatically raising living standards.'
The four-sentence letter urges leaders to 'establish the necessary incentives, safeguards, and institutions to guide AI to assist humanity and benefit society.'
Stanford University’s Digital Economy Lab reported that over 200 economists and AI researchers have signed the letter so far, including 16 Nobel Prize laureates.
Yoshua Bengio, a computer scientist and pioneer in AI research who is currently a professor at the University of Montreal, is among the signatories. In a separate statement, he said that based on current AI development trends, AI is 'very likely to profoundly change our economy.'
Bengio stated: 'We must thoughtfully make collective, democratic decisions, rather than allowing market forces to dominate and risk leaving the majority of people far behind.' (Intern translator: Huang Yu-Han / Editor: Chang Ming-Hsuan) 1150714
