(Central News Agency reporter Li Chien-chung, Taipei, 14th) The Sports Ministry today announced the roster for the 2026 Nagoya Asian Games, revealing that 482 athletes will compete across 34 sports. Regarding recent controversies over athlete qualifications in surfing and sport climbing, Minister Li Yang stressed that a comprehensive review will be conducted after the Asian Games to establish new selection methods.
Recent disputes over athlete eligibility in surfing and sport climbing have drawn public attention. Minister Li Yang responded for the first time during today’s press conference.
Li Yang stated, 'We have received extensive feedback on discussions about surfing and sport climbing. Back when we were still under the Sports Administration, we had already notified all associations about selection procedures when launching the Asian Games plan in 113. Changing the rules right before the Asian Games is inappropriate and unfair—systems are a crucial component.'
However, Li Yang emphasized that after this year’s Asian Games, he will invite relevant professionals to reassess and establish sport-specific selection methods to ensure optimal athlete representation.
Li Yang joked, 'When I was an athlete, I only cared about my own performance during competitions. Now as minister, I’m most concerned about logistical support for athletes and the delegation. I keep thinking about what the government can do and how we can better care for our athletes.'
He noted that the delegation includes as many as 10 team physicians, with 5 more stationed at relay points, and over 40 athletic trainers in total.
On expectations for the Nagoya Asian Games, Li Yang reiterated that no specific medal targets would be set, emphasizing that the priority is for athletes to compete safely and successfully. However, as a former badminton player, he couldn’t help expressing excitement over his former partner Wang Chi-lin’s potential performance, and admiration for Chou Tien-chen’s ability to maintain a high level of performance across five Asian Games appearances.
Among the 482 registered athletes are multiple Olympic stars, including Lin Yu-ting, Chen Nien-chin, Huang Hsiao-wen, Kuo Hsing-chun, Yang Yung-wei, Lee Chih-kai, and Tang Chia-hung. Notably, Lin Yi-chun from the shooting team is an eight-time veteran, making her the most experienced athlete in the delegation. (Edited by Lung Po-an) 1150714
