(Central News Agency reporter Li Hui-ting, Pingtung County, July 15) The Pingtung County Government has launched a program to promote the recycling and reuse of discarded fishing nets, offering a reward of NT$15 per kilogram. Four temporary storage sites for discarded fishing nets have been established. For fishing ports without such facilities, fishermen can call a dedicated hotline for assistance with collection and transportation.

According to a press release issued today by the Pingtung County Government, this year’s program for recycling and reusing discarded fishing nets includes a reward of NT$15 per kilogram. The initiative also strengthens pre-processing, classification, recycling, and reuse mechanisms, aiming to transform discarded fishing nets into circular resources. Fishermen registered in Pingtung County are eligible to apply for the reward, and the program will end once the total collection reaches 20 metric tons.

The Ocean and Fisheries Affairs Management Office of the county government stated that the four temporary storage sites are located at the Donggang District Fisheries Association, Shuili Village Fishing Port, Wenfeng Fishing Port, and Fangliao Fishing Port. For fishing ports without storage sites, fishermen can call the dedicated hotline (0970-233-322) operated by Da-Jen University, the contracted service provider, to arrange for collection or designated drop-off points.

The Office warned that improperly disposed fishing nets may drift into the ocean, becoming marine debris that entangles marine life such as turtles, whales, dolphins, and fish, thereby harming marine ecosystems and fishery resources. The program aims to reduce the amount of discarded nets entering the marine environment and help fishermen develop proper recycling habits, enabling sustainable coexistence between fishery production and marine conservation.

The county government emphasized that it will continue collaborating with central authorities, fisheries associations, and local fishermen to advance the reduction, recycling, and circular reuse of fishery waste, working toward the goal of sustainable marine development.
