Wu Cheng, spokesperson for the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), stated today that the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) has already implemented a 'three-line defense' strategy involving comprehensive inspections and strict controls, vowing to block problematic oil products from entering the market. Protecting food safety requires practical problem-solving, but it is regrettable that the Blue-White alliance has taken the opposite approach, treating public health as a political bargaining chip, focusing only on gaining attention while contributing nothing to clarifying the truth.
In a press release, Wu Cheng explained that the MOHW's 'three lines of food safety defense' include completing nationwide inspections within one week, establishing a strict restocking mechanism, and strengthening source management, abnormality reporting, and inspection systems through legal amendments—ensuring no product is allowed on the market until its safety is confirmed. Additionally, judicial and prosecutorial authorities have fully intervened in cases where unscrupulous businesses deliberately conceal information or delay reporting. Going forward, the government will directly conduct random inspections on downstream products to completely eliminate loopholes that allow upstream businesses to submit self-conducted tests and attempt to deceive regulators.
Wu Cheng pointed out that the Blue-White alliance claims to prioritize food safety, yet their actions are self-contradictory. Last week, despite typhoon threats, they insisted that Premier Cho Jung-tai abandon disaster response command to attend a legislative food safety briefing. This week, when Cho attended as agreed upon in cross-party negotiations, the Blue-White bloc turned around and obstructed proceedings. This 'opposition for opposition’s sake' political farce proves they have no genuine concern for food safety and are merely using livelihood issues as tools for political struggle.
Wu emphasized that the executive team has responsibly provided comprehensive explanations as required by the legislature and openly accepted public scrutiny. If the opposition truly cares about public health, they should return to rationality, support judicial investigations and systemic reforms, and offer concrete, constructive proposals—instead of repeatedly using insinuative political rhetoric to blur focus and create unnecessary social panic.
