The Ministry of Education encourages kindergartens to integrate 'gender equality' into their teaching activities. The affiliated kindergarten of Binmao Elementary School in Taitung County guides children to observe everyday clothing choices, prompting reflection on gendered perceptions of attire and colors.
The Ministry released a press statement today introducing the 'Integration of Key Issues into Early Childhood Education Programs' initiative, emphasizing that gender equality must be rooted from an early age. By leveraging children's natural affinity for play, educators aim to cultivate awareness of gender equality, self-protection, and mutual respect, fostering an inclusive, respectful, and diverse learning environment.
At the affiliated kindergarten of Binmao Elementary School in Taitung County, students read and discuss picture books related to gender issues, such as 'The Paper Bag Princess' and 'Yi Li! Hu,' using clothing and fashion as entry points to explore personal preferences and question gender stereotypes associated with clothing and colors.
Meanwhile, the affiliated kindergarten of Liren Elementary School in Tainan City uses picture books and games to instill the concept of 'My Body, My Choice' in young children. Morning exercise routines are utilized to promote bodily autonomy. The curriculum also encourages children to examine gender-related assumptions—such as which activities are deemed suitable only for boys or girls—gradually teaching respect for diversity and critical thinking about gender role construction.
The Ministry emphasized that early childhood is a critical period for the development of self-concept and social behavior. Early childhood institutions adopt integrated, interdisciplinary teaching methods, using age-appropriate, flexible, and diverse educational activities to naturally embed gender equality into children's daily experiences. This approach deepens the understanding of respecting differences and lays a solid foundation for building a more inclusive and compassionate society. (Edited by Chen Ching-fang)
