5 Camphor Trees on Zhonghua Road in Hsinchu City Affect Traffic Safety, Will be Removed and Improved

The Hsinchu City Government issued a press release stating that the roots of 5 camphor trees next to No. 142, Section 6, Zhonghua Road had heaved, causing people to trip. After receiving the report, the city government conducted an on-site inspection and overall assessment through a tree doctor, and will initiate a hazardous tree removal operation.

Mayor Kao Hung-an stated that according to the assessment, in addition to the root growth causing the ground to heave, some of the tree bodies have also shown signs of decay and termite damage, raising structural safety concerns. If they continue to be kept, it may increase public safety risks.

She said the city government has decided to adopt professional advice and will carry out the camphor tree removal operation from tomorrow to the 24th (postponed in case of rain), while simultaneously optimizing the pedestrian environment.

Lee Wu-Hsi, Director of the Maintenance Engineering Office of Hsinchu City, told a Central News Agency reporter that in the future, they will continue to inventory the condition of street trees within their jurisdiction, implement maintenance management and necessary disposal, and create a safer, more comfortable, and friendly pedestrian space for citizens.
