The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) issued a press release today stating that Liberal International (LI) unanimously passed a statement on May 20, London time, to congratulate Taiwan on the 30th anniversary of its direct presidential elections and the second anniversary of President Lai Ching-te's administration, emphasizing that the alliance will stand firm with democratic Taiwan.

In response, DPP spokesperson Lin Chu-yin expressed sincere gratitude to Liberal International for its unwavering support for Taiwan and for consistently speaking out for Taiwan on the international stage.

Lin pointed out that as the premier global federation of liberal political parties, Liberal International is a core force in defending democratic systems. This international network brings together political leaders, members of parliament, party and government officials, and representatives of international organizations from Europe, America, Africa, and Asia. Amidst current global geopolitical turmoil and a wave of authoritarian expansion, the alliance's firm support for Taiwan substantively embodies the key cohesive power of transnational political networks in defending the democratic camp.

Liberal International issued an official statement titled "Standing Firmly with Taiwan on the 30th Anniversary of its Direct Presidential Election and the Second Anniversary of President Lai Ching-te's Administration," extending its sincerest congratulations to the Democratic Progressive Party, a full member, and its chairman, Lai Ching-te. The statement noted that the 30th anniversary of Taiwan's direct presidential elections is not only a historic achievement in Asian democratic history but also a profound testament to the resilient spirit of the Taiwanese people.

The statement pointed out that as democracies worldwide grapple with the challenges of authoritarian expansion, cognitive warfare, and political polarization, Taiwan has successfully developed a strong model of resilience. Through transparent oversight mechanisms, a free media environment, and a highly engaged civil society, Taiwan leads Asian countries in global democracy indices.

The statement indicated that as the DPP enters its third consecutive term in power, Liberal International highly commends the government's excellent governance. It noted that under President Lai's steady leadership, Taiwan's commitment to strengthening its self-defense capabilities fully demonstrates its firm resolve to defend its national sovereignty, democracy, and freedom against the growing threat of authoritarianism.

Liberal International also expressed deep concern over the escalating geopolitical challenges in the region, pointing out that China's continuous military incursions and grey-zone tactics pose a clear threat to regional stability. The statement condemned China's economic coercion against third countries during President Lai's planned routine state visits, stating that it not only violates international norms but also undermines maritime and aviation safety.

Regarding international participation, the alliance expressed regret over pressure from China. The statement noted that with the World Health Assembly (WHA) convening in Geneva, Liberal International deeply regrets Taiwan's continued exclusion due to Chinese pressure. The alliance emphasized that as global health challenges increasingly cross borders, excluding Taiwan, a "responsible and reliable partner," creates a dangerous gap in the global health network. It asserted that Taiwan has a fundamental right to participate in international organizations and that its inclusion is crucial for the health and well-being of all humanity.
