Central News Agency, Taitung, May 23. The Taitung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station (DARES) has issued an alert regarding an increase in rice stem borers in the paddy fields of Chishang Township and Guanshan Township in the Taitung Rift Valley. If left unchecked, the pest can cause empty rice heads, significantly impacting yield. The station urges farmers to strengthen field inspections and take appropriate control measures. According to the station, the current rice heading stage, combined with warmer and drier weather, has led to a noticeable increase in adult borer populations. Since larvae bore into the stems, timely intervention is critical. The station recommends field sanitation, removing weeds, and applying pesticides at the optimal time.
