China Faces Peak Rainfall; Flood Season Precipitation Up 18.6% Compared to Average

Many regions in China are currently facing severe flooding, with today and tomorrow expected to be the period of heaviest rainfall. Experts point out that precipitation during this year's flood season is 18.6% higher than average, and recent heavy rains are the result of multiple atmospheric circulation systems. According to the China Meteorological Administration, heavy to torrential rain is expected over the next three days in Hubei, Henan, Anhui, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Hunan, Chongqing, Shaanxi, and Shanxi. The Ministry of Water Resources has activated Level 4 flood defense responses in four provinces, bringing the total number of provinces under flood defense mechanisms to seven. Sun Mingyang, an engineer at the National Climate Center, stated that the average national precipitation from April 1 to May 22 reached 110.1 mm, 18.6% higher than the historical average. Global warming and El Niño are cited as contributing factors.
