The Post-Baccalaureate Medical Program at National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) held its first graduation ceremony today. After obtaining their medical licenses, the graduates will serve in remote and offshore medical facilities. Minister of Education Cheng Ying-yao expressed his hope that the students would protect patients and society with professionalism and conscience. The graduation ceremony, themed 'Weaving Waves into Robes, Setting Sail for Medical Ambition,' celebrated the 23 graduates as they leave campus for the medical field. Minister Cheng, NSYSU President Lee Chi-peng, and others attended to witness this important milestone. Minister Cheng stated that the establishment of the medical school and the post-baccalaureate program at NSYSU not only shoulders the important task of cultivating medical talent in Southern Taiwan but also carries the social responsibility of responding to the medical needs of remote and offshore areas. He also expressed his hope that the students would not only be doctors but also innovators in solving health problems, protecting patients and society with professionalism and conscience. President Lee noted that the post-baccalaureate program has focused on 'interdisciplinary literacy' as the core of selection and training since its inception. Students possess diverse academic backgrounds and life experiences, giving them a different perspective and critical thinking ability compared to traditional medical students. He encouraged the graduates to remember that medicine is not just technology but a connection between people, and that maintaining empathy and humanistic care alongside professional judgment is a lifelong task. According to NSYSU, after obtaining their medical licenses, the graduates will undergo general medical training and specialist residency training before serving in remote and offshore areas. Currently, some students have already entered medical centers and regional teaching hospitals for clinical training and will work in fields such as internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, pediatrics, and emergency medicine.
