(CNA, Geneva, May 24) As the Ebola virus threatens several African nations, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated today that over 900 suspected cases have been identified in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). In a statement on Facebook, Tedros noted that as the DRC intensifies surveillance, more than 900 suspected cases have been found to date. He further mentioned that in the Ituri province, where the outbreak is occurring, nearly 5 million people live amidst ongoing conflict, with one in four requiring humanitarian aid. The DRC Ministry of Health reported last night that 204 deaths have been recorded across three provinces. The WHO has previously declared this Ebola outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).
