Canadian Conservative MP Michael Chong reiterated in an interview with the National Post that to maintain peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region, Canada should maintain its bilateral relationship with Taiwan and not 'kowtow' to Beijing by complying with demands such as stopping visits to Taiwan. Chong stated that nothing is more important for trade and investment than peace and stability, and that a conflict in the Indo-Pacific would have a more severe impact on global trade than the Russia-Ukraine war. He argued that Canada must show Beijing that unilateral action against Taiwan would come at a high cost. Chong visited Taiwan earlier this month and met with President Lai Ching-te. Despite criticism from China, he emphasized that his visit was a defense of Canadian sovereignty and that acquiescing to China's unreasonable demands would only make the Indo-Pacific region less stable.
