Formosa Petrochemical Boosts SAF Production with New Used Cooking Oil Facilities

(CNA) Formosa Petrochemical (FPCC) Chairman Tsao Ming stated today that the geopolitical crisis triggered by the U.S.-Iran war highlights the urgency of energy transition. FPCC is accelerating green energy development and is constructing new facilities to recover used cooking oil for the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Tsao noted that FPCC plans to supply about 5,500 tons of SAF to airlines in 2025, though this is still far from the medium-to-long-term target of 50,000 tons. To secure raw materials, the company is looking into importing used cooking oil and collaborating with National Cheng Kung University on microalgae research. The adoption of SAF depends on airline costs and government regulations.
