The Hsinchu City Government announced today that the renovation project of the former Children's Discovery Museum will be transformed into a 'Science Education Center.' The facility will feature creative laboratories, a permanent semiconductor exhibition, and immersive theaters, aiming to create a science education hub through age-appropriate design and inquiry-based learning. Mayor Kao Hung-an stated that the original renovation project was halted in September 2022 due to the contractor's failure to perform, leading to corrosion of steel structures. Since April 2024, the city has commissioned professional engineers to assess the structure, and the design plan was finalized in June 2025. The project is currently in the detailed design and budget review phase, with bidding expected to start this July, targeting completion by 2028. The design will remove the existing black sphere and external platforms to reduce structural load, while retaining the white frame as an iconic feature. The new exterior will use steel and transparent glass to create a modern artistic space, with warm lighting at night to continue the 'sky lantern' imagery.
