The average hourly wage in Japan's three major metropolitan areas is 1,720 yen, marking the 45th consecutive month of year-on-year increases.

A record high for the second consecutive month, with five job categories, including office work, setting new records.

In the office work category, the increased proportion of positions targeting experienced workers has driven up the average.

Overview

The average hourly wage in the three major metropolitan areas for June 2026 was 1,720 yen (up 3 yen or 0.2% from the previous month, up 16 yen or 0.9% year-on-year), the highest on record. This marks the 45th consecutive month of year-on-year growth.

The office and administrative category recorded 1,709 yen (up 4 yen from the previous month, up 28 yen year-on-year), the second consecutive month of record highs. The rise in wages continues to be driven by increased job complexity and specialization across office roles. Additionally, June typically sees a slowdown in job seeker activity despite active corporate hiring, leading to a relatively higher proportion of high-paying roles requiring specialized skills, thus lifting the overall average. Specifically, listings included secretary positions at major corporations requiring English skills and administrative roles at megabanks under 'foreign language clerical work' and 'financial clerical work'.

The IT and engineering category reached 2,809 yen (up 42 yen from the previous month, up 189 yen year-on-year), also setting a new record. Against the backdrop of generative AI adoption, full-scale data utilization (DX), and cloud migration, downstream roles such as operations and support have decreased, while upstream roles like development and project management—characterized by higher difficulty and higher pay—have increased, raising the average wage floor.

Looking ahead, with the summer vacation season approaching and children entering long holidays, job-seeking activity among housewives—the core demographic in the dispatch market—is expected to temporarily slow. Consequently, demand is expected to relatively increase for roles offering better work-life balance, such as 'start after 9 a.m.', 'leave before 5 p.m.', and 'minimal overtime'.

Among job categories in the three major metropolitan areas, all except 'light labor, logistics, factory, and others' showed month-on-month and year-on-year increases. Five job categories set new records.

In June, average hourly wages in the Tokai and Kansai regions showed both month-on-month and year-on-year growth.
