Mizuno conducted a survey on awareness of summer "onkatsu" (body warming) habits. The purpose of this survey is to understand the awareness and current practices regarding summer onkatsu, and to support health maintenance and measures against feeling cold.

The survey results showed that only 12.4% of respondents are "practicing summer onkatsu," and 10.7% are "interested but not practicing." On the other hand, 49.8% of people "do not know about onkatsu," making it the largest category. This revealed that summer onkatsu is not "unnecessary" but rather "has not yet become established as a word or habit."

Furthermore, among those who are "practicing summer onkatsu," the breakdown was 49.1% men and 50.8% women, showing nearly equal levels. Generally, onkatsu is perceived as an initiative centered around women. However, these results indicate that onkatsu is spreading as part of summer health management, regardless of gender.

The Challenge of the Air Conditioning Era: "Summer Coldness"

The survey found that the most common situation for being conscious of onkatsu was "indoors with air conditioning" (60.5%). The reasons for practicing summer onkatsu were "countermeasures against cold from air conditioning and cold drinks/food," "countermeasures against summer fatigue," and "regulating autonomic nerve imbalances," all cited at similar levels. In recent years, with extreme heat being addressed as a social issue, while air conditioning is indispensable for these countermeasures, the temperature difference between outdoors and indoors can lead to a situation where "it's hot but you feel cold."

Summer Onkatsu Methods

Summer onkatsu practices are primarily focused on actions that are easy to incorporate into daily life.

The main methods practiced include the following actions:

- Consuming warm drinks and food (53.2%) - Bathing (49.2%) - Exercise (49.2%) - Measures to prevent the body from getting cold in air-conditioned environments (46.8%)

In addition to food and beverages (67.7%), apparel items such as stoles and cardigans (46.8%) were frequently used for onkatsu.

These results show that summer onkatsu involves not only internal care through "food" but also external health management through "things to wear."

In particular, for preventing cold in air-conditioned environments, apparel that can be easily put on and taken off is a convenient summer onkatsu item.
