ZOZO, Inc., the operator of the fashion e-commerce site ZOZOTOWN, conducted a survey titled 'Survey on Self-Identity and Fashion' targeting 500 LGBTQ+ individuals aged 18 to 49 across Japan, ahead of Pride Month in June. The survey revealed that approximately 70% of respondents consider it important to express their identity through fashion, with 'fashion' being the most cited method for feeling authentic. Conversely, more than half admitted to having given up on their preferred style due to concerns about others' perceptions, a trend particularly strong among the younger generation. Furthermore, nearly one in two respondents stated they are unable to express their true selves through fashion, highlighting a gap between the desire for self-expression and actual behavior. Through this survey, the company aims to visualize the realities and challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals and promote understanding of inclusive fashion experiences. In addition, with the cooperation of members of the 'YouthProject' from Tokyo Rainbow Pride, which the company has sponsored since last year, a roundtable discussion was held in May to explore the daily struggles and thoughts on fashion that go beyond survey data. The company also makes donations to 'Marriage For All Japan,' an organization working toward a society where everyone can freely choose whether or not to marry, regardless of their sexual orientation. ZOZO has established DE&I as one of its four key sustainability initiatives, aiming to create workplaces and communities where everyone can live authentically and happily. The company remains committed to respecting diversity and creativity, supporting all individuals, including those in the LGBTQ+ community, to express themselves with dignity through their own unique styles.
