Analysis of Areas with Seasonal Concentration of Inbound Tourists

The NAVITIME Data Analysis Team at Navitime Japan has released the results of an analysis identifying areas where inbound foreign tourist stays were concentrated in specific months throughout 2025, based on usage data from their navigation app 'Japan Travel by NAVITIME.'

Navitime Japan periodically conducts analyses using data from its navigation app for inbound tourists. By aggregating stay data from January to December 2025 by municipality and month, they identified areas where stays were highly concentrated. A clear trend emerged: inbound tourists are visiting specific regions aligned with the dates of traditional firework festivals and festivals held across Japan. They conducted a detailed analysis of five particularly prominent areas.

Analysis methodology: Areas with more than double the normal visitor count were extracted using inbound GPS data.

Analysis Results: Areas with concentrated tourist stays

1. Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture: Nagaoka Festival Fireworks (August) Tourist peaks were observed on the event dates of August 2nd and 3rd.

2. Tsuchiura City, Ibaraki Prefecture: Tsuchiura All Japan Fireworks Competition (November) Visits were concentrated on November 1st, the event date.

3. Kishiwada City, Osaka Prefecture: Kishiwada Danjiri Festival (September) Tourist peaks were observed on September 13th and 14th. Touring to Osaka City and the Osaka-Kansai Expo venue was also confirmed.

4. Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture: Karatsu Kunchi (November) Visits peaked on November 2nd and 3rd. Touring patterns included Fukuoka, Saga, Kumamoto, Nagasaki, and Kagoshima cities throughout Kyushu.

5. Chichibu City, Saitama Prefecture: Chichibu Night Festival (December) Tourist peaks were observed on December 2nd and 3rd. Touring patterns included Nagatoro Town (Hodosan Shrine) and Kawagoe City (Toki no Kane).
