KDDI Corporation and NTT Docomo, Inc. announced on May 20, 2026, that they have completed the development of a shared repeater to efficiently expand millimeter-wave coverage, with the cooperation of Kyocera Corporation. Field trials using this repeater will begin this summer at Ueno Park. This repeater can relay signals from both KDDI and Docomo's millimeter-wave base stations in a single unit. While 5G millimeter-wave offers high speed and large capacity, it is susceptible to obstacles, making this repeater essential for efficient area expansion. By sharing filters and amplifier circuits that were previously implemented individually, the device can now relay signals from both companies simultaneously. It is also compact and lightweight (4.9 kg), allowing for installation on streetlights. The summer trials at Ueno Park will evaluate coverage expansion effects and operational effectiveness.
