The XG Mobile Promotion Forum (hereinafter "XGMF") and Dynamic Map Platform Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Shuichi Yoshimura; hereinafter "Dynamic Map Platform") announce the launch of the "Community-Integrated Future Mobility Communication Infrastructure Social Implementation Project" under XGMF.

This project will collect and analyze outcomes and challenges from autonomous driving demonstration experiments and social implementation initiatives taking place across Japan through interviews and surveys with local municipalities. It aims to examine the most essential form of autonomous driving and regional mobility for Japan, and to translate these findings into policy recommendations to the national government and the planning and execution of new demonstration projects.

In this project, Shuichi Yoshimura, President and CEO of Dynamic Map Platform, and Junichi Shiga, External Director, will serve as leaders, with Professor Hiroyuki Morikawa of the University of Tokyo and Co-Representative of XGMF participating as Deputy Leader.

Background of the Project

With the progression of declining birthrates and population decrease, securing transportation options and maintaining public transit systems have become nationwide social challenges. To address these issues, demonstration experiments and social implementation initiatives using autonomous driving technologies are being conducted across Japan.

However, insights and challenges gained from these regional efforts are not sufficiently shared or organized, making it crucial to horizontally disseminate knowledge among municipalities and clarify common obstacles toward broader social implementation. Additionally, for the successful social implementation of autonomous driving, multifaceted challenges must be addressed, including securing communication environments, vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) coordination, establishing remote monitoring systems, and verifying business viability.

This project will leverage XGMF’s industry-academia-government collaboration network, which includes over 200 corporate, organizational, and individual members, to integrate expertise from telecommunications providers, mobility-related companies, manufacturers, IT firms, research institutions, and universities, advancing discussions toward sustainable regional mobility.

Project Overview

The "Community-Integrated Future Mobility Communication Infrastructure Social Implementation Project" aims to consolidate insights from autonomous driving demonstrations and social implementation efforts nationwide, and to explore models for regional mobility utilizing communication and mobility technologies.

This project emphasizes the creation of sustainable systems that consider cost-effectiveness and business viability, going beyond isolated demonstration experiments. By conducting interviews with municipalities and analyzing case studies, it will identify core challenges and success factors, and develop scalable models that can be applied across different regions.

Main activities include:

- Conducting interviews with municipalities implementing autonomous driving demonstrations and social implementation - Organizing outcomes and challenges from demonstration cases across Japan - Identifying challenges related to V2I coordination, communication infrastructure, remote monitoring, and business viability - Holding regular study sessions and discussions among XGMF members - Planning and hosting seminars involving autonomous driving-related companies and the telecommunications industry - Developing business models and standard models with social implementation in mind - Discussing policy recommendations to the national government and planning for new demonstration experiments

Throughout this work, it has advanced collaborations with diverse stakeholders, including automakers, telecommunications providers, local governments, and research institutions.

In this project, the company will leverage its experience to lead cross-sector discussions and promote issue identification and policy advocacy aimed at realizing sustainable regional mobility.

Comments

Professor Hiroyuki Morikawa, Co-Representative of XGMF / University of Tokyo

"For the social implementation of autonomous driving and next-generation mobility, it is essential to take a multifaceted approach—not only vehicle-level technology but also communication infrastructure, business sustainability, and region-specific transportation challenges. XGMF includes members from diverse fields such as telecommunications providers, electronics manufacturers, mobility companies, IT and consulting firms, research institutions, and universities, making it a significant platform for such cross-sector discussions. Through this project, we aim to generate practical insights toward realizing regionally rooted, sustainable mobility solutions."

Junichi Shiga, External Director, Dynamic Map Platform Co., Ltd.

"Demonstration and social implementation initiatives for autonomous driving are underway across Japan, accumulating valuable insights. Moving forward, it is crucial to move beyond isolated efforts and share these insights across regions and industries, evolving them into forms that enable broader social implementation. In this project, we will organize challenges and success factors through dialogue with municipalities and businesses, and examine the form of autonomous driving and regional mobility that Japan truly needs."

Shuichi Yoshimura, President and CEO, Dynamic Map Platform Co., Ltd.

"Solving regional mobility challenges requires collaboration among municipalities, transportation operators, telecommunications providers, and technology companies. Dynamic Map Platform will contribute to advancing this project by leveraging its expertise in spatial information infrastructure developed in the autonomous driving and mobility fields, as well as its role as a connector among diverse stakeholders. By sharing insights accumulated from demonstrations and social implementation efforts nationwide and organizing challenges and success factors, we aim to deliver concrete policy recommendations and initiate new initiatives toward sustainable regional mobility in Japan."
