enstem Inc. (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Kundai Yamamoto; hereinafter 'enstem') announces that its proposal to collaborate with Keio Electric Railway Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Tama City, Tokyo; President and Executive Officer: Satoshi Mikura; hereinafter 'Keio Railway') on the safety and health management wearable service 'Nobi for Driver' has been selected under the 'JISOU' business-unit-driven open innovation program initiated by the Keio Group.
This initiative aims to further enhance safety management in train operations by visualizing drivers' health changes, drowsiness, near-miss incidents, and signs of heat stress risk, thereby complementing existing health checks with data.
Background: Supplementing 'Invisible Signs' in Train Operations with Data
In the railway industry, ensuring safe and stable transportation is one of the most critical missions. In daily operations, various measures such as roll calls, training, education, and routine checks are conducted to monitor crew conditions and prevent human error.
However, factors related to human condition—such as changes in health, drowsiness, fatigue, and reduced concentration—are often difficult to detect based solely on self-awareness or self-reporting. By supplementing these 'invisible signs' with data, there is potential to further enhance on-site safety checks and guidance.
enstem has been supporting self-care by drivers and appropriate managerial interventions through its wearable service 'Nobi for Driver,' designed for those engaged in driving duties, by visualizing signs of health changes and drowsiness. In this co-creation PoC, enstem will leverage its accumulated expertise to verify further enhancements in safety management within Keio Railway's operational environment.
Overview of the Co-Creation PoC
In this PoC, 'Nobi for Driver' will be used to visualize data on crew members' health changes, drowsiness, near-misses, and heat stress risks during duty hours. The collected data will serve as reference information to complement existing health checks and safety management practices, with Keio Railway jointly evaluating its practical usefulness in real-world operations.
Additionally, enstem will explore usage methods that support drivers' self-care and managerial interventions, while considering operational burden and ease of sustained adoption.
About 'Nobi for Driver'
'Nobi for Driver' is a wearable service designed for individuals engaged in driving duties. By analyzing biometric data collected from smartwatches and similar devices, it visualizes signs of health changes and drowsiness, supporting both self-care by drivers and appropriate managerial communication and decision-making.
Throughout pre-operation, during-operation, and post-operation phases, it supplements traditional roll calls and self-reports with data to detect condition changes that are otherwise difficult to identify, thereby contributing to preparedness against health-related risks and enhanced safety management.
Future Outlook
Through this co-creation PoC with Keio Railway, enstem aims to explore effective data utilization methods to enhance safety management in train operations and to build an operation model that can be sustainably implemented on-site.
Moving forward, enstem will continue to promote social implementation across industries that rely on frontline workers—such as logistics, passenger transport, railways, manufacturing, and construction—by visualizing employee health changes and invisible risks to prevent accidents and occupational injuries.
