Sado-based French Artist Charles Munka to Hold Solo Exhibition in Hiroshima After Two and a Half Years.

Starting Saturday, May 23, 2026, Nekoyacho Gallery on the 2nd floor of the Nekoyacho Building in Hiroshima will host a solo exhibition by French artist Charles Munka titled "WHERE THE GREY LIGHT MEETS THE GREEN AIR."

Born in Lyon, France, Munka has been based in Sado City, Niigata Prefecture since 2018. His 2023 exhibition "Tameshigaki," held as part of the Nekoyacho Building's opening program, received significant acclaim. This upcoming exhibition marks his first solo show in Hiroshima in approximately two and a half years and will feature a new series of works.

The pieces in this exhibition are paintings that depict the "interstitial moments of moving from one place to the next." While they manifest as landscapes, they do not represent specific lands or coordinates. Instead, they capture the accumulation of emotions and atmospheres as one passes through time and space—moments where everything remains in motion and nothing is yet fixed. This uncertain transition is the central theme of the new series.

The exhibition title is drawn from a passage by the poet T.S. Eliot. The phrase, where "grey light" and "green air" intersect, symbolizes ambiguous boundaries and transitioning time, resonating quietly with the landscape worlds Munka creates. Constructed using various techniques—including oil, acrylic, charcoal, and print transfer—the canvases navigate the space between memory and drift, reality and abstraction. Within these small scales, scenes unfold like fragments of a journey. A total of 20 works are scheduled for display.
