Re-release of Rose Poivre, a Masterpiece by Modern Perfumery Legend Jean-Claude Ellena

The Different Company (The Different Company), a French creator fragrance maison founded in 2000 by the modern perfumery maestro Jean-Claude Ellena.

Rose Poivre, launched at the birth of the maison, will be available in a pre-sale starting Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at Isetan Shinjuku, followed by a wider release on Wednesday, July 29, at selected stores and the official online store.

At the time, the bold fusion of rose and pepper was unimaginable to anyone, overturning the established notion of rose as merely 'delicate and sweet,' and inscribing a new chapter in the history of maison fragrances. Even today, this innovative scent continues to captivate fragrance lovers around the world.

【Rose Poivre Eau de Parfum】 It luxuriously incorporates rare rose essence—only 1 liter can be extracted from approximately 4,000kg of roses. Layered with black pepper, the fragrance elevates into an intellectual and bold scent that stands apart from conventional rose perfumes.

Fragrance Family: Spicy Floral

Top: Black Pepper, Pink Pepper, Coriander The scent opens with a sparkling burst of spice—an elegant, dry, and intellectual opening without sweetness.

Middle: Damask Rose, Rose de Mai Two precious types of roses are used, but thanks to the effect of pepper, they are portrayed not as 'delicate flowers' but as fresh, edgy, and vibrant blooms full of life.

Base: Vetiver, Civet The hallmark of Ellena’s artistry. Civet adds warmth and a sensual quality reminiscent of human skin, while vetiver provides earthiness and depth to complete the composition.

【The Perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena – Comment】 I wanted to depict the 'truth' of the rose. It is not simply a sweet, well-behaved flower. At its essence, the rose harbors something wild, animalic, and provocatively sharp.

To bring out this hidden facet, I chose black pepper and pink pepper.

This fragrance is a 'olfactory illusion' born from the mutual blending of rose and spice.

Born in Grasse and the son of a perfumer, Jean-Claude Ellena was immersed in the mysteries of perfumery from childhood. He began his career at Chiris at the age of 16, then deepened his expertise at Givaudan in Geneva. He has created numerous acclaimed works for prestigious maisons (Van Cleef & Arpels, Bulgari, Cartier, Hermès, etc.), each achieving instant success.
